Art isn’t just about what you see—it’s about what you feel, what it makes you think, and sometimes, what it makes you rethink. Our incredible resident artist, Kim Rizio (@studiorizio), just wrapped up a stunning sustainable art installation that challenges the way we view “waste.” With a whole lot of creativity, teamwork, and over 100 hours of dedication, Kim turned discarded plastics into something truly unforgettable.

Finding Meaning in the Unlikely

Kim’s inspiration for this piece? A deep dive into the idea that what we think of as disposable actually has lasting value. In her words:

“My work investigates the idea that the things we believe to be temporary or disposable actually hold a permanence and power that can be easily overlooked. I am seeking to challenge the concept of value and demonstrate the potential of the words and objects we so easily throw away.”

This project wasn’t just about making something beautiful—it was about making a statement. And what makes it even more special? The sheer number of hands that helped bring it to life. By cutting, wiring, and assembling all the recycled pieces together, Kim and her team showed just how powerful collective effort can be.

The Journey from Idea to Reality

We’re beyond excited to share the final masterpiece that started at our Plastic Free Cities Capstone Event and came to life thanks to Kim’s artistic vision.

This project wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing energy and effort of so many people. A huge shoutout to Kim for leading the charge, and to Erika, Maggie, Michelle, and everyone who joined in for a fun (and creative!) time to put the finishing touches on this piece. 🏖️

Behind the Scenes: How It All Came Together

Creating an installation like this isn’t a quick weekend project—it takes time, patience, and a whole lot of heart. Here’s how Kim made it happen:

  • Sketching the Concept – Laying out the vision for the piece.

  • Material Collection – Gathering discarded plastics and recyclable materials to give them a second life.

  • Cutting & Wiring – Transforming those raw materials into something usable.

  • Assembly – Carefully putting everything together, piece by piece.

  • Photography & Documentation – Capturing the journey so others can see the magic behind the scenes.

And the result? A breathtaking piece of art that proves sustainability and creativity go hand in hand.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Kim didn’t do this alone. She had a dedicated team of eight, plus an incredible group of people from the event who jumped in to help. The photos from the process say it all—so much passion, collaboration, and joy went into every step.

Where Will the Artwork End Up?

That’s still TBD, but the goal is to install it at a local high school where Plastic Free Cities has been involved. This way, students can see firsthand how discarded materials can be turned into something meaningful—and maybe even get inspired to create their own sustainable art.

A Lasting Impact

Kim’s installation is more than just a cool art piece—it’s a powerful reminder that everything (and everyone!) has potential, even if we don’t see it at first glance. By repurposing materials that would’ve otherwise been trash, she’s showing us how to think differently about waste, art, and community.

So, a massive THANK YOU to Kim for her vision, passion, and talent. This piece is proof that when creativity meets sustainability, something truly magical happens. ✨
