Big Blue & You Celebrates Earth Day at José Martí MAST!

This Earth Day, Big Blue & You had the joy of joining the José Martí MAST community on April 22 to celebrate the planet and the power of youth-led change! The occasion was extra special—it marked the grand opening of the Xavier Cortada Eco-Art Courtyard, a creative space where art and environmental awareness come together in beautiful harmony.

Our team, Lauren and Michelle, brought the Ocean Knowledge Wheel to the celebration, turning conservation trivia into a crowd favorite. Students couldn’t wait to spin for prizes and show off their ocean smarts. One of the most thought-provoking questions?

The event was a perfect blend of fun, education, and purpose—and none of it would’ve been possible without the passion and leadership of Mr. Andrew Kearns, who wears many hats wonderfully:

  • Mathematics Department Chair

  • Botany & Research Instructor

  • Green Club / Fairchild Challenge Sponsor

  • Professional Development Liaison

  • Earth Day Celebration Event Coordinator

Mr. Kearns, your dedication to your students, your school, and the planet is nothing short of inspiring. We’re so grateful for the opportunity to celebrate with such a thoughtful and vibrant community.

Big thanks to Mr. Andrew Kearns and the entire José Martí MAST family for welcoming us this Earth Day!

Trivia Answer Time!
Remember the question: How long can it take a plastic bottle to break down in the ocean?

  • Answer: Up to 450 years!
That’s right—a single plastic bottle can linger in our oceans for centuries, harming marine life and polluting fragile ecosystems. It’s a powerful reminder of why reducing single-use plastics and making sustainable choices is more important than ever. Every small action counts toward a cleaner, healthier planet.
