A Conversation for Change: Inspiring Students to Pursue Environmental Careers
We were thrilled to participate in the Youth Environmental Career Summit hosted by Miami Waterkeeper. It was an engaging and inspiring event that brought together over 60 passionate members of our community who are curious about the vast possibilities in environmental careers. The energy and enthusiasm in the room were truly contagious, and it was incredible to witness such a vibrant community come together with a shared commitment to protecting our planet.
A special thank you goes out to our exceptional panel moderator, Louis Aguirre, Emmy-award winning journalist and environmental advocate from WPLG-Local 10 News. Louis expertly guided the conversation, bringing his wealth of knowledge and passion for environmental issues to the forefront.
We were especially proud to have our Lead Intern, Alejandro Ganaza, on the panel. Alejandro, an incoming freshman at Columbia University, has demonstrated remarkable leadership in environmental advocacy through his work with Big Blue & You and his involvement with initiatives like Plastic Free Cities and the Youth Action Council for Heirs to Our Oceans' UN Ocean Decade. His voice and perspective added immense value to the discussion, inspiring many young attendees.
“I had an amazing time sharing my insights into years of hard work as a high schooler progressing through the advocacy world and voicing my community both locally and nationally. Being able to shed light on how to start and grow your impact to fellow high school students truly warmed by heart.”
The panel also featured other distinguished experts and advocates who shared their insights and experiences:
Maddie Kaufman (Program Director, Debris Free Oceans) – Marine scientist specializing in reef ecosystems and plastic pollution solutions.
Dr. Kassidy Troxell (Research Assistant Professor, Florida International University) – Environmental analytical chemist focused on water quality and emerging contaminants.
Mariana Aziz Pico (Legal Environmental Policy Specialist, Miami Waterkeeper) – Environmental lawyer with expertise in ocean conservation and climate adaptation.
Our thanks go to all the organizations that supported the event, each playing a critical role in South Florida’s environmental movement:
From brainstorming ideas and managing logistics to spreading the word and bringing incredible energy, the team truly brought their A-game. The result was an event filled with meaningful conversations, fresh ideas, and genuine excitement about environmental stewardship and career paths.
We are inspired by the passion of these young people and grateful for the opportunity to foster their growth as future leaders in conservation. Together, we are building a stronger, more sustainable community, one student at a time.
